How it really feels to be 19 years old and a college graduate

I remember that time when there was a job expo in our school and me and my blockmates decided to pass our resumes for our internship. I remember that time and I remember myself freaking out. I was literally freaking out because I haven't done my resume yet and I didn't feel like doing it. The idea of me graduating in a few months has dawned on me and it was terrifying at that moment. I even thought of adding another degree just so I could extend two more years in college - that's how bad I was freaking out haha!

Fast forward to this day - I'm 19 years old and is officially a college graduate. How does it feel??? Well, there's two things: I'm excited and at the same time, I'm terrified.

COLLEGE GRADUATE AND EXCITED

It hasn't been that long ago when there were several times that I wished for me to just finish college. Of course, those were the times when I was so frustrated, tired and just so done with being a college girl. All I could just do during those times was to think ahead of all the things that I could and would do once I finally had the freedom and the time to do it. It was exciting to think about it, and until now, it still is.

It's exciting to think how you have your whole life ahead of you, where you're free to do anything you want and to be anything that you want to be. It's exciting to think that finally, you can start living your dreams and that finally you can become the person you always thought you were meant to be. The idea of having a blank canvas ahead of you is exciting to me, it's like finally you have the chance to actually live your life the way you want to. Finally, you are free and just thinking about it makes me feel like floating.

COLLEGE GRADUATE AND TERRIFIED

I bet you've heard a lot about how fun and exciting it is to be a college student, but what most people fail to tell you is how terrifying it is to be a college graduate. After how many years of following a path, after how may years of being told what to do, you're suddenly left alone not having any idea on what your next step should be. It's a jungle out there, and being a college graduate means being thrown out to the jungle whether you're ready or not. And this I tell you, no matter how much you think you're ready for the real world, you're never going to be until the time that you actually get out there.

Yes, you're finally on your own, but that just means that you're on your own on everything - whether it is the good or the bad. You're on your own and that means that you have no one to blame but yourself in any case that you screw up. You're on your own and that just means no one is going to tell you how to act on your first interview, no one's going to tell you what to answer on your potential employers' questions, no one's going to tell you which job offer you should say yes to - no one, it's all up to you now.

So yes, being a college graduate is not just one big party. It also includes the aftermath of a wild and crazy party. It's not all glitz and glamour, there are of course those days when you have to endure commuting to different places just so you could go to different job interviews. It's not all sunshine and rainbows because there are those days when you just feel like you're lost in the dark.

That's why if you're still in college, I hope that you do everything that you can to enjoy it. Acads may make you want to kill yourself, but trust me not knowing how to do your homework is still so much better than not knowing how to get by with your life.

Well, this is definitely true specially that we, Filipinos are used to depend so much on our families unlike in other countries when they've reached the legal age, they're obliged to have their own lives. That's why they tend to be more mature than us since they get to expose themselves more of the real struggles of being left alone than us. Btw, congratulations! You've graduated in such a young age. How I wish I can graduate as early as 19! :D

  2. Congratulations! I was about to ask why you're done with college at 19 then I realized, DLSU is on a trimester academic calendar.:) Hehe! Welcome to the real world. Take your time in finding a job. Do not rush into something just because you feel like going with the flow. Trust me, that will help you in landing a job that you really love where you'll have the chance to grow career-wise as well.

    1. Thanks Rose! Also, thanks for the advice! From time to time, I really need to be reminded that I sholdn't rush into finding a job just because my friends are already getting one na or because of other reasons. I really should weigh my decisions more especially when it comes to decisions like this :)

So true. As they say, enjoy it while you're still young. I've been done with school for years now and I still miss it like it was just yesterday. Anyway, congratulations & good luck!
